Small Town Charm – Carmel, IN

Carmel, Indiana is fairly close to Indianapolis (it took us about 30 minutes to get there from Indy) and well worth the trip. We particularly enjoyed walking along the streets of Carmel and enjoying the many unique shops and restaurants in the area.

Our favorite area is the Carmel’s Arts and Design District and City Center. It’s in the Old Town Carmel area. Along with the numerous galleries, cafes and shops, you’ll love the lifelike sculptures by John Seward Johnson II, “The Normal Rockwell of American Sculpture” that line the streets of the design district. Our boys got a big kick out of these unique works of art.

The design district hosts several annual events and festival throughout year. If you enjoy art, you’ll want to visit in September, for their juried art exhibit that features artists from all over the world. The Museum of Miniature Houses opened in 1993 and has several exhibit rooms full of furnished houses, miniature glassware and much more.

Carmel Clay’s water park was the perfect way to cool down on a hot summer day. This popular waterpark had a variety of opportunities to get wet. You’ll enjoy the lazy river, water slides, lilly pads, and so much more. It was a great way to spend a lazy summer afternoon!

While deciding where to eat can be a daunting task given all the unique choices, we dined at Bub’s Burgers and Ice Cream. The restaurant opened in 2003 and has quickly become a hot spot known for its Big Ugly burgers. Those who actually can finish this mammoth sized burger get their picture on the wall! The restaurant has been featured on the television show, Man vs. Food. Obviously, they know how to do burgers but they also serve Mahi Mahi, elk burgers, children sandwiches and bud dogs. You definitely need to leave room for their delicious hand-dipped ice cream as well. The atmosphere was fun and the food was delicious. It’s no surprise that they are so popular!

We look forward to returning to Carmel and discovering for ourselves why it was named the “Best Place to Live in the United States” by CNN Money magazine in 2012! Yes, a return trip is on our agenda.
