Playa Largo Resort & Spa
Key Largo, Florida

While no passport is needed, you may feel that you have entered another world when you step into the lobby of the Playa Largo Resort & Spa in Key Largo, Florida.

You know immediately that there is something different about this resort the moment you lay eyes on it. It’s definitely a crown jewel in the area and happens to be the first resort built in the Florida Keys in more than 21 years. It’s only about an hour from Miami which makes it quite easy to get to (but be forewarned – you won’t want to leave).

The resort is a mixture of old-world class and modern day amenities. The design is Ameri-Caribbean and offers 177 rooms, suites and bungalows (along with one beach house).

After checking into our room, the boys flung open the patio door and was on the white-sand beach in mere moments.  Ultra-cool hammock swings beckons one to forget about unpacking and simply climb in and let the breeze drift you away. I admit, I didn’t waste much time before I tried one of them out.

The man-made beach (one soon discovers that beaches in the Florida Keys are naturally rough and rocky) is blissfully free of the rock that dominates the Florida Key area.  We were able to truly sink our toes into the sand and enjoy a walk on the beautiful beach.

The gorgeous pool was amazing and was flanked but numerous chaise chairs where you could sit back and enjoy the views of the pool and the ocean.  Also nearby was a gas fire pit where families can gather and reconnect.  We spent a great deal of time that night just sitting by the fire pit and talking to one another. There is also a fire pit area on the beach that many families enjoyed.

Don’t worry about getting hungry! The resort offers three very distinct types of dining (along with room and beach service as well). Sol by the Sea features fresh seafood entrees and is on the waterfront. Las Olas is the resort’s ceviche bar and Flagler’s Steak House is an upscale steak restaurant.

The resort also features Ocean Spa – a full-service spa, salon and fitness center. And, while you are getting rejuvenated at the spa, children can have fun at the children’s activity center.

The resort prides itself on outstanding customer service and I can honestly say we were greeted with impeccable service from all the staff we encountered.

There’s a lot to do in the Florida Keys area. One can find every water sport imaginable, swimming with dolphins, and so much more. However, we found that it was pretty hard to leave the resort itself. And if you decide to simply enjoy the resort, you won’t be sorry.  We felt that the Playa Largo Resort & Spa was a destination in of itself.  They have truly broken the mold on what a vacation in Key Largo should be like.
