Every family has that one tradition that signals the true start of the holiday season. For us, it is Wildlights, efficiently powered by AEP Ohio,  at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium. No matter how busy the year gets or how unpredictable Ohio weather can be, our crew always finds one evening to bundle up, head to Powell, and soak in the magic that only millions of twinkling lights can bring.

We have been going for years, and somehow it still feels just as enchanting as it did the first time we stepped through the entrance. The moment we walk in, the entire zoo glows. Trees dripping in lights, pathways shimmering with color, and the holiday music floating through the air. It is the kind of festive atmosphere that makes you slow down, breathe in the crisp winter air, and remember exactly what this season is all about.

Every visit starts the same way. Hot chocolate in hand and a slow wander toward the lake. The animated light show, dancing lights perfectly timed to classic holiday tunes, never fails to stop us in our tracks. Being able to enjoy it together is part of magic.

One of the things we love most is that Wildlights is not just lights. It is a full zoo experience with a festive spin. Certain indoor exhibits stay open, which is a lifesaver on cold nights, and our we never pass up a chance to visit the manatees or see the reptiles up close. The mix of warmth, wildlife, and winter lights keeps everyone happy.

Seasonal Extras include photos with Santa, warm drinks, and ride experiences like the carousel or train (weather permitting).

Every year we discover something new. A fresh display, a new photo spot, or a fun treat to try. It keeps the experience exciting, even for families like ours who return annually.

If you live anywhere in Ohio, Wildlights deserves a spot on your family’s holiday calendar. Yes, it gets chilly and yes, you will walk more than you planned, but that is all part of the adventure. The glow of lights, the shared laughter when your fingers get too cold, the family photos that never quite turn out perfect but still end up on the fridge, it all becomes part of your story.

Our family has visited Wildlights through toddler meltdowns, school age excitement, and now the shared joy of experiencing with daughters-in-laws and a new grandbaby. No matter what season of life we are in, this tradition finds a way to ground us and bring us together.

So if you are looking for a holiday destination that delivers beauty, fun, and a touch of nostalgia, make your way to the Columbus Zoo this season. Bring your gloves and your favorite people. You might just find a tradition worth repeating.
